The Art of Pottery

From functional to decorative pieces, we encounter ceramics in everyday life. Whether it’s the mug you drink your coffee from in the morning or the pot holding your plants, we are surrounded by a range of ceramics. As demonstrated in the BBC series, The Great Pottery Throw Down, mastering the skills needed to create exquisite ceramics can be challenging yet also rewarding when the final piece arrives out the kiln just as envisioned.

The Process

As with most forms of art practice makes perfect when it comes to mastering certain techniques in the world of ceramics. There are certain steps that need to be taken in order to achieve the desired effect and create a piece that is suitable for the intended purpose. For example the type of clay, throwing process, glaze and firing techniques all influence the final outcome and will need to be selected and managed carefully.

Technique

As shown on The Great Pottery Throw Down, there are a range of techniques that can be utilised to create various pieces and effects. From Raku to Slab Building and Throwing, many unique and unusual pieces can be formed by utilising these methods.

Introducing The Creative’s Loop

Founded by a marketing professional with a degree in textiles and professional writing, The Creative’s Loop is designed to assist artisans with their marketing. For many creatives 2020 has been a challenging year. With retail outlets, galleries and markets unable to operate properly throughout the year, other channels for showcasing products have had to be considered. The Creative’s Loop offers artisans a platform to showcase their work through mostly online channels, including blogs and social media.

How it works

1 After requesting to join The Creative’s Loop you would set up a standing order to pay the small subscription fee (which is only £1 per month for the first 30 that sign up!) This contributes towards general costs and paid digital and print advertising.

2 You will send 3 images along with a bit of information about them per month to thecreativesloop@gmail.com. These will be organised ready to distribute across our selected platforms. The images could be final products, works in progress or advertising for workshops and events. They could even show something about you. For example, they could capture yourself working on a project or what you are inspired by. Points to consider when taking the images include composition, lighting and the background.

3 The images will be showcased in a number of places including blogs and across our Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest pages. The world of digital marketing is fast paced. All the latest trends will be monitored and appropriate techniques will be applied.
