From functional to decorative pieces, we encounter ceramics in everyday life. Whether it’s the mug you drink your coffee from in the morning or the pot holding your plants, we are surrounded by a range of ceramics. As demonstrated in the BBC series, The Great Pottery Throw Down, mastering the skills needed to create exquisite ceramics can be challenging yet also rewarding when the final piece arrives out the kiln just as envisioned.
The Process
As with most forms of art practice makes perfect when it comes to mastering certain techniques in the world of ceramics. There are certain steps that need to be taken in order to achieve the desired effect and create a piece that is suitable for the intended purpose. For example the type of clay, throwing process, glaze and firing techniques all influence the final outcome and will need to be selected and managed carefully.
